Schloss Bürresheim palace

St. Johann

Bürresheim Castle was actually a castle in the Middle Ages, meaning it was both a knight's residence and a defence structure. Nevertheless, the term "castle" is very appropriate here, as the magnificent interior of this Rhenish residential castle makes visitors dream of times gone by and Cinderella. Since the Middle Ages, all generations of residents have contributed extensive furniture as well as numerous paintings and other furnishings to the interior.

Like all castles, Bürresheim Castle does not just consist of a single building, but of a keep, many walls, gates, towers and corridors as well as a palas and, in addition, an excellently preserved official residence from the 17th century. Throughout the castle's eventful history, parts of it have been extended and remodelled time and again. After the last owners handed the castle over to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, extensive renovation work was carried out, including the restoration of the original baroque gardens.
