Schieferwanderweg - Route 2 - in Kehrig / Eifel
Kehrig
The slate hiking trail - Route 2 - begins and ends at the Catholic parish church of St. Castor and St. Katharina in Kehrig.
Starting at the parking lot in Brunnen-Heerbachstraße, the path leads up to the right (at the Brunnen-Heerbachstraße property no. 14) to the agricultural road. It runs behind the church on the left in the direction of the wind turbines, which are visible from afar. Here you cross the K25 at the entrance to Kehrig and the slate hiking trail continues along the agricultural road towards Wüsterrather Hof, past the windbreak. From here, on a clear day, you have a beautiful view of the Nürburg, the Hohe Acht, the local communities of Reudelsterz and Kürrenberg as well as the imposing elevations of the Hochsimmer, the Hochstein and the Ettringer Bellerberg. Past the wind turbines on the left, the Schieferwanderweg forks into routes 1 and 2 (route 1 is also marked with a black dot).
At the Hardterweg crossroads, the hiker first turns right and then left again and past the wind turbine in the direction of Düngenheimer Mühle/ Müsch into the idyllic Elz valley. From here you reach the main hiking trail of the Eifelverein: the Osteifelweg (Bonn-Mayen-Monreal-Moselkern). Follow the hiking trail in the Elzbachtal valley to the Lohbrücke bridge. Before the Lohbrücke bridge, turn right to reach the Mädburg monastery ruins. Here you have the option of walking straight ahead up into the Klosterbach valley, past the sewage treatment plant on the left and back to Kehrig (route 1 marked with a black dot). If you feel hungry or thirsty, you should hike up to the right at the sewage treatment plant to the Elztal Nord motorway service area for a short break. Keeping to the right at the Mädburgkapelle chapel, the slate hiking trail now leads left parallel to the Elzbach stream under the BAB-Elzbachtal bridge, still following the Osteifelweg trail, to the asphalt road to Kehrig. Turn left uphill to the BAB service area Elztal Süd. After a short rest, the route leads back through the highway underpass and past the sewage treatment plant in the direction of Kehrig (Elztalstraße). From there, continue to the village center on the right (Polcher-Straße) back to the church. Here it is also worth visiting the beautiful parish church of St. Castor and St. Katharina, which is brightly lit in the evening and can therefore be seen from afar.
The walking time for the slate hiking trail - Route 2 - is around 3.5 hours.
